Proposed Michael A. Perkins Airpark

An application has been filed by Perkins Ranch, Inc., for rezoning of 1,043 acres from residential to industrial and a conditional use permit for the airport. The rezoning signals the creation of an industrial/commercial corridor along the south side of Perkinsville Road from the existing edge of town out to the airpark. The proposed airpark is not a facility where personal homes and hangars can be built.

In evaluating the long-term impact of the airpark, we need to look at not just what the immediate plans are, but what the airpark may become. If an airport is approved with a scenario of limited flights, there is nothin that would prevent it from being used in other ways, including the “touch and go” runway for Embry Riddle that was proposed several years ago.

Economic projections for the airpark do not specify the impact of the airport itself. The town has not explored the question of whether job-producting development could be planned that excludes the airport, or which includes industries less disruptive to Chino Valley’s current surroundings.

A similar airpark exists in nearby Paulden, Arizona, and more information can be found here and here.
